How to Avoid the Pitfalls for Auto Transport By Andy Dartier Whilst certain transporters follow the rules regarding service to the customer, others do not give priority to customer's needs. Therefore don't be blase about picking an transporter, but choose one that has experience and a good name.
A lot of transporters will make a lot of effort in their advertising in the Yellow Pages and on the Internet. However, though they may present a good company image in their ads, this is no guarantee that they are a reputable and trustworthy operation. The transport industry is not well regulated and the number of rules that need to be adhered to is small. Deregulation of transporters began in the 1990s and as a result the majority of transporters follow their own state laws as a guide to operating their business. Not surprisingly, not all states are well regulated.
By dealing directly with private operators you should be able to get a really reasonable price. But hiring without
an intermediary can also have a down side. For instance, you will probably not get much personal service or flexibility - the transporter will have set schedules and planned routes to maximize their profit, and you will simply have to work around these. It is you who will have to be accommodating to their needs, not the other way around. So don't expect much choice about time and date of drop-off at either end. Make sure you take a good look at the terms and conditions of any transporter you are considering with this particular issue in mind.
Many people choose to go with the big transport companies for the long, cross-country trips. The main reason is that the big guys offer great deals on a huge choice of pick-up and drop-off locations. But be wary about the door to door deals. You should discover how many truckers will be involved with the transport - if it involves many handovers the chances of change-over damage are greater. Get to know the options before you make any choices - it may turn out that the best deal is to pay someone you know and trust to drive your and fly them out or back.
Some transporters literally permit door-to-door service whereby your vehicle is only loaded onto a trailer intended to go from one address to another. This is very rare and most transporters transport the vehicle to a terminal where it is reloaded on a different trailer to another terminal and then again to another trailer that transports your car to your final address. To save extra handling on your car, offer to take your vehicle directly to the terminal and arrange to pick up your vehicle at the nearest terminal to your final destination. Not only does this save wear-and-tear on your car but also it can cut down on expenses.
